Chicago Riverwalk

Chicago’s Riverwalk is a lively, scenic promenade that traces the south bank of the Chicago River through the heart of downtown creating an intimate escape framed by some of the city’s most iconic architecture.

Blending recreation, culture, and design, the Riverwalk showcases Chicago’s ability to turn its industrial past into a vibrant, people-centered public space

The Riverwalk is divided into distinct sections—often called “rooms”—each with its own character. You’ll find open plazas with stepped seating, waterfront cafés and bars, kayak rentals, boat docks, and quiet coves. Native plantings soften the urban setting, while public art and interpretive signage highlight the river’s history and ecology.

By day, it’s a popular spot for walking, lunch breaks, and architectural boat tours gliding past. In the evening, it comes alive with outdoor dining, twinkling lights, and reflections of skyscrapers shimmering on the water.
